Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship Testimonials
What Graduates Say
I am immensely grateful to have been given the opportunity to complete a fellowship at UICOMP Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship. Without a doubt, I would 110% choose this program again. This is not only because of the vast opportunities but also the amazing people I got to work with every day and now call my family. I was drawn to this program because of the astounding program director, Dr. Na’Allah, who advocates not only for her patients but also for some of the most vulnerable communities. Her commitment inspired me.
I appreciated how well-rounded and robust this fellowship program was. From performing cesarean sections, vaginal deliveries, gyn procedures, women’s health outpatient procedures, urgent care, MFM clinic, high-risk OB clinic, LARC, research, and supervising residents, it has prepared me to confidently return home and practice as a full spectrum FMOB.
Thank you Dr.Na’Allah for mentoring me and being a role model. I want to give thanks to the phenomenal faculty and community FMOBs/OBs who taught me throughout this year. I would also like to give a big thank you to our fellowship coordinator, Melissa Koch. She is a true gem and keeps everything afloat. I truly appreciate your warm heart and care. Will forever and always be honored to be part of this fellowship.

Having worked with the fellows as a UICOMP resident, I knew that it would offer excellent training and growth as I had watched them evolve year after year. When it came time to interview for programs, I was not only looking for strong training in high-risk OB and women’s health but also a well-rounded program that would allow me to develop as a teacher, patient advocate, and Family Medicine physician. Dr. Na’Allah ensures that this fellowship delivers on all of the above and more. She tirelessly works to support her fellows. I am also very grateful to have had such a wonderful coordinator, Melissa, who keeps everything running smoothly and deeply cares about you as a person. I am honored to have had the opportunity to be a part of this fellowship.

I could not have asked for a more educational or caring program to attend for my OB/Women’s Health Fellowship. Upon graduation, I achieved comfort and competency with cesarean sections, high-risk antepartum management and vaginal deliveries, D&Cs, colposcopies, LARCs, endometrial biopsies, and postpartum tubal ligations. The program provides excellent training with mentorship from both FM/OB faculty as well as local OB/GYNs in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Dr Na’Allah, in particular, as program director really advocates for your wellness and learning, and Melissa Koch as program coordinator really helps you tailor your fellowship per your interests. They make this program feel like family. I had a baby during my fellowship year and both made what could have been a very stressful year as seamless and supportive as possible. Not only does this program check all the boxes for acquiring surgical and medical skills, but it also provides that ‘special sauce’ where you feel at home.

It is difficult to sum up a year full of mentorship, camaraderie and opportunities that ultimately lead to significant growth as an obstetrician and teacher in a few sentences. This program has proven to be much more than what I had come in expecting it to be. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from my peers, patients and colleagues. Certainly, one of the things that I have most appreciated is the diversity and inclusion at this program. It is with mixed emotions that I am leaving this program; while I will miss the people I have had the pleasure to work with, I am leaving with full confidence in my skills as a full scope family physician providing high risk and surgical obstetrical care to my future patients.
I would be remiss to not express that growth and success at this program would not be possible without the meaningful interactions, mentorship and discussions I’ve had with the faculty. I want to thank Dr. Na’Allah for her continued and unwavering guidance and support. Also, what makes this program thrive is someone whose work ethic, tenacity and grit is second to none. Thank you to Melissa Koch, our fellowship coordinator, for always being so kind and keeping everyone afloat. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have been selected for this fellowship program.

I am so glad to have done this fellowship! I have truly appreciated the well-roundedness of the curriculum. Not only are you on labor and delivery and in the OR, but you are also in continuity clinic, OB clinic, urgent care, supervising residents in the hospital and in the clinic, doing ultrasounds, and participating in research and faculty development. I have learned so much this year about reproductive health care and obstetrics. I have grown both as an independent physician and as an attending physician. I have become confident in managing very high-risk patients during their prenatal care and during labor and have honed my surgical and procedural skills. The Fellowship Director Dr. Na’Allah, and the rest of the family medicine faculty and OB/GYN attendings have been very supportive and made a great learning environment.

I came into this fellowship with the main goal of gaining mastering in managing high risk obstetrics and confidently performing cesarean sections as a primary surgeon. But I have gained and accomplished so much more than I can imagine! As a proud graduate of the fellowship, not only have I accomplished my goals of competently performing tons of cesarean deliveries, I have evolved into a well-rounded clinician-educator with a strong clinical foundation in caring for women within the large context of their family from preconception to postpartum and beyond. Dr. Na’Allah, (the amazing fellowship director that drew me to this program), her family medicine faculty, the high volume of cases and clinical complexity, make this program a unique fellowship experience that I will pick time and time again if I had to do the year all over.

I am beyond satisfied with my women’s health/OB fellowship experience. I am graduating with all the procedural competency, medical knowledge and educational skills that I wanted out of fellowship. Additionally, I am inspired by the community of physician educators I have been mentored by at the residency program this year. They, and in particular, Dr Na’Allah, are tireless advocates for their patients and residents. I could not have chosen a better or more fulfilling fellowship experience.

I came to this program because of Dr. Na’Allah. She is such a wonderful advocate for her patients and for her community that I was inspired and wanted to learn from her. I can truly say that I have learned more from her than I thought possible. She has mentored and mothered me throughout the whole year – even being my own doctor! There are excellent opportunities for surgical obstetrics and advanced women’s health procedures so that you can get excellent training and feel very confident going into independent practice!

Dr. Na’Allah thoughtfully refines this fellowship to maximize our learning opportunities in consideration of our future goals and it fully delivered on all my expectations. My surgical skills have been honed through more cases than promised, my obstetrical and women’s health knowledge is evidence-based and current, and my transition to an attending was met with an ideal blend of autonomy and support. The personal investment in my professional development by the entire community of Peoria far exceeded my expectations. As a result, I am graduating from this fellowship with the ability to provide safe and appropriate full spectrum care for patients and their families and the gift of lifelong support from similarly minded mentors.
