We Are Committed to Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

The UICOMP Pediatrics Residency program commits to supporting diversity and inclusion in all forms for patients, trainees, faculty, and staff across different aspects of personal identity, including age, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, cultural history, socioeconomic status, spiritual and religious beliefs, ability, and sexual orientation. Inherent within our commitment to the individuals and education within our program is the condemnation of all acts of discrimination, including but not limited to sexism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and ableism.

We pledge to not only speak up but also advocate with intentionality to be agents of change within our program, department, institution, community, and nation when facing individuals or policies antithetical to our mission. We support our trainees when they actively respond to these atrocities as we aim to promote a diverse, inclusive culture of justice and equity. We recognize the ongoing negative impact due to acts of oppression, ranging from structural racism and derogatory stereotypes to misogyny.

Beyond recognition, we aim to develop educational and research endeavors to support cultural humility and to promote the agency of individuals to spark change for the greater good.

We value justice, equity, and diversity as essential components to foster an inclusive learning and work environment, especially for the role they play in healthcare and patient outcomes. We recognize the room for growth that we have as a program and strive to continually advance for the betterment of our patients, trainees, faculty, and staff.

Ultimately, graduates from our program will be prepared to provide and advocate for high-quality, culturally sensitive care to all pediatric populations.
