Last week, Peoria MedPeds and @uicompeoriapeds residents joined medical students from @uicompeoria , SIU, and ATSU at "Diabetes Camp." As cabin clinicians, they helped to navigate the highs and lows with the campers -- and gained insight on living with #type1diabetes -- even if only for a week. Around 100 campers got to be "just kids at camp" with this opportunity. It truly is a collaborative experience -- with nurses, nursing students, dieticians, and dietetic interns joining camp directors and camp counselors to provide a safe environment for these kids.

It's been an exciting two weeks for the Peoria MedPeds (+friends) softball team, Commotio Cordis. Last week--was like an unexpected platinum weekend--a victory long in the making with 12 runs!

This week, while the team ultimately lost to our competitors, they put 7 big ones on the scoreboard--three of which were by Dr. Utz herself! And, Dr. Munk's glove stayed on during another amazing outfield catch!

It's retreat season! Our Peoria MedPeds PGY-2 class tried their hand at pottery at the local Wheel Art Pottery Studios. Master Potter, Jacob Grant, gave lessons on both hand-building and wheel throwing. We learned some new (non-medical) skills while sharing a day of camaraderie.

Subramanian, Ford-Davis, and Shaikh, attendees had hands-on teaching and practice on the topic of "Troubleshooting Tracheostomy and Gastrostomy Tube Complications."

Why I Chose Peoria...
I’m as rural as they come so Peoria feels big to me but never overwhelming. I really wanted a program that allowed me to see a wide variety of patients but wasn’t too big. Peoria is perfect for that! I also LOVE my co-residents and our program leadership. To get to come to work and work with my friends everyday makes residency so much better!

If I weren't a doctor, I'd be...

About Me...
Outside of work, I enjoy baking, reading books, hiking and spending time with friends and family. I'm also a huge fan of college basketball (Go Cats!). My career interests include medical education and primary care. I plan on being a MedPeds primary care physician and hopefully be in academic medicine in the future.

Why I Chose Peoria...
I was impressed by the large presence of the MedPeds program within the hospital and the medical school. Also, all the residents and faculty I met here during my in-person interviews here were very warm and friendly, and I knew I could see myself being a part of the Peoria MedPeds family. As a resident, I have felt very well supported by both my co-residents and the faculty. I know the MedPeds and categorical faculty are always just a phone call or text away when I run into a challenge or need advice.

If I weren't a doctor, I'd be...
an elementary school teacher.

A fun fact about me is...
Growing up, I played 3 musical instruments (viola, piano, and guitar).

Favorite thing to do in Peoria...
I enjoy going to the Farmers' Market at the Riverfront during the summer and the various seasonal festivals in and around Peoria like the Pumpkin festival in Morton, IL (aka Pumpkin capital of the world) with friends & family.

Outside of the hospital I love spending time with my wife, Emily, and our children Scarlett, Winnie, and Noah. We love to travel as a family, and particularly enjoy going to Disneyworld and participating in RunDisney events. I love playing and watching nearly all sports, and have been proud to host a weekly UICOMP pick-up basketball game amongst students, residents, and faculty.

Why I Chose Peoria...
I loved the range of pathology that came through Peoria, knowing that I had the opportunity to get experienced at seeing bread and butter cases, but also having a catch radius large enough to see the one in a million disease processes as well. I also loved the Peoria area, knowing that it provided a great family friendly environment with a multitude of community events and experiences.

If I weren't a doctor, I'd be...
working with Sports Analytics.
