Independent IR/DR Residency

The Independent IR/DR residency program is entirely conducted at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, a 629 bed adult hospital and a 136 bed attached children’s hospital. Both serve as community hospitals for the 350,000 Peoria metropolitan area and tertiary referral hospital and level I trauma center for 26 counties in north central Illinois with a population of 2.25 million. The program has six full-time IR faculty with 24/7 coverage. The program is small by design with only two residents per year, but in a large, high volume (just under 15,000 IR procedures) department. The clinical experience is complete with all levels of complexity, acuity, and variety of procedures/clinical conditions treated in today’s IR department. The support for the IR department from the University and Medical Center is outstanding with state-of-the-art facilities, including equipment, personnel, and space.

Notes:

  • IR service also does all image guided biopsies, drainages, ablations, MRAs + CTAs of abdomen, pelvis, and lower extremities.
  • Vacation: Residents may not take two (2) weeks off during the same rotation.
  • Clinic rotations: In order to facilitate resident participation in the longitudinal care of patients, particularly oncology and vascular disease patients, the resident outpatient clinic rotations will be spread out over their entire two years at the rate of four half days per month. This will allow residents to see patients on whom they have performed procedures over time to experience outcomes in real life, witness disease natural history, and enjoy the bond between patient and treating physician. Residents will purposely be paired with all attendings to learn from each physician’s style and approach.
