A Week in the Life of a Resident

Shifts

Shifts rotate while in the Emergency Department, with a strong effort made to minimize stress of shift changes and maintain circadian rhythms (as well as following the ACGME Residency Duty Hour requirements).

Shift length is 10 hours, and start times are staggered throughout the day to provide optimum education for residents and coverage for the department.

  • PGY1 residents work 21 shifts per month
  • PGY2 residents work 20 shifts per month
  • PGY3 residents work 18 shifts per month

Residents have two weekends off per month when in the department.
