Didactic Experience

The Psychiatry Department at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria is committed to education. Our program combines a comprehensive clinical experience with a robust didactic curriculum, providing residents with the necessary preparation for practice and national board examinations.

The carefully designed didactic curriculum aims to achieve five goals:

  1. Progressive education: Residents will advance from fundamental knowledge to a detailed understanding of psychiatry.
  2. Diverse teaching methods: We offer various teaching modalities to accommodate different learning styles.
  3. Concurrent topics: By covering multiple topics simultaneously, we enhance long-term retention.
  4. Engaging learning environment: We foster active participation among residents.
  5. Striving for excellence: Our curriculum aims for excellence as evidenced by high in-service examination scores and a 100% first attempt pass rate on national boards.

We monitor curriculum content, schedule, attendance rates, and faculty and guest speakers, as well as exam scores, to ensure we meet residents’ needs.

In addition to their education, residents also play a vital role in teaching others. They work with and teach medical students during clinical rotations. Furthermore, senior residents support the formal curriculum by teaching select courses to first-year residents and medical students. Residents receive feedback on their content development, organizational skills, and presentation abilities. We recognize and celebrate excellence in resident teaching at our annual departmental awards ceremony.

Scholarly Experience

Our program has developed a user-friendly scholarship program that effectively facilitates scholarly participation and productivity. This program encompasses a wide range of opportunities for residents and faculty interested in engaging in various types of scholarship, including discovery, integration, teaching, and application.

The program consists of four key components:

  1. Completion of an online human subjects research bioethics course.
  2. Participation in scholarship retreats to enhance scholarly pursuits.
  3. Generate a scholarly product, such as a poster, research paper or case study.
  4. Present scholarly findings during departmental grand rounds to foster knowledge sharing and professional development.

Our program offers flexibility, allowing residents to explore diverse scholarly interests. A dedicated scholarship director oversees the program, reviewing scholarly products, coordinating the annual scholarship retreat, and planning additional scholarship activities.
