Learning Activities
The fellow engages in a robust educational program aimed at supporting their learning and skill integration. In coordination with their supervisor and director, the fellow will receive an individually tailored learning plan that includes the following core activities:
Weekly Hourly Learning
Once a week the fellow will engage in one of the following activities. These activities occur on a rotating basis each month.
Grand Rounds
The fellow meets with psychiatric residents, attending physicians, and clinical psychologists for a 60 minute structured presentation on various mental health topics (e.g., Factitious Disorders, Internet Gaming Use Disorder, etc.) during the first week of the month. The fellow will present at least one presentation on a topic of their choosing during the fellowship.
Journal Club
The fellow meets with psychiatric residents, attending physicians, and clinical psychologists for a 60 minute prepared presentation and discussion on a mental health related journal article during the second week of the month. The fellow will present at least one journal article on a topic of their choice during the fellowship.
Professional Development Meeting
The fellow meets with a faculty member for 60 minutes to learn about topics of career development, such as the licensure process, supervision and mentoring, developing an office-based practice, working in higher education, etc. during the third week of the month.
Case Conferences
The fellow meets with psychiatric residents, attending physicians, and clinical psychologists for a 60 minute case presentation during the fourth week of the month. The fellow will present at least one case of their choosing during the fellowship.
Didactic Seminars
The fellow will spend an hour to two hours each week in a psychiatric didactic seminar with psychiatric residents hosted by department faculty. Topics include intro to psychopharmacology, assessment and treatment of personality disorders, LGBTQ+ care, forensic psychology, EMDR, and substance use among others. In some cases, the fellow will spend an additional hour with a faculty member to discuss applicability to clinical psychologists.
Other Activities
The fellow will have up to a half day a week to engage in opportunities to teach residents or medical students, participate in research, or supervise psychiatric residents. These opportunities are provided under the guidance and supervision of faculty members within the department. Opportunities vary each year and may be subject to change based on availability.
For example, fellows may have the opportunity to teach psychiatric residents on focal topics (e.g., co-teaching a topic within the introduction to psychotherapy course), providing group supervision to psychiatric residents conducting psychotherapy, and engaging in research with a faculty.
