Dr. Richard Anderson, originally from Yorkville, Illinois, received his undergraduate degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Biochemistry from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois in 1988. He received his doctorate in medicine and completed a Surgical Internship at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, Illinois in 1992. His residency in General Surgery was completed at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria in 1998. In 2000, Dr. Anderson completed a fellowship at Washington University/Barnes Hospital, in St. Louis, Missouri in Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Anderson is board-certified in both General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Anderson joined the faculty at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria in 2000. Since then, he has been promoted twice and is now a Professor of Clinical Surgery. He is also Chief, Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery and an Attending Team Leader for the residency service. In July 2009, he became the Department of Surgery Clerkship Director and has served in the position to the present. In June of 2021, Dr. Anderson was named Chair of the Department of Surgery, University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. Dr. Anderson will also serve as the Medical Director for the lung cancer program and as Director of Surgical Education at UnityPoint Health Methodist.

Dr. Anderson has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards from his students and residents including the Lorin D. Whittaker, Sr. M.D. UICOMP, Department of Surgery Teacher of the Year Award every year from 2002 – 2018 and the Department of Surgery Resident Teaching Award in 2005, 2009 and 2021.  He received the Golden Apple Award – Raymond B. Allen Instructorship Award four times, an honor given by the medical students to one UICOMP faculty member annually. The UICOMP Class of 2011 chose Dr. Anderson for the Alpha Omega Alpha Teaching Award. His UICOMP faculty peers awarded him the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2005/2006 and the Outstanding Service Award in 2004/2005 and in 2019/2020. In 2006/2007 and 2019/2020 he was awarded the Faculty of the Year Award at UICOMP. Other honors Dr. Anderson received are 40 Leaders under 40 Award (2005), America’s Top Surgeon’s (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017), American Board of Cardiology Award (2012), and the Rock Doc Award (2017). The UICOM-P students have invited him four times to be the Graduation Speaker for UICOMP, and has served as a James Scholar Mentor.

Dr. Anderson is an active member and officer of many surgical societies. He held the office of Chairman of the Illinois State Medical Society Board of Trustees for four years, and now serves as the Past Chair and Secretary/Treasurer. He serves on several other committees for the Illinois State Medical Society as well. He served as President of the Illinois Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (2010-2012), has been a Governor for the American College of Surgeons (2014-2020), and has served as President of the Illinois Surgical Society (2018-2019). He also serves on various committees for the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. He is an active member of many hospital committees for OSF St. Francis Medical Center, including Quality and Assurance, Credentials, Cancer, Cancer Strategic Planning, and the Executive committee. He has also held the position of the Chair of the Department of Surgery at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center since 2008.

Besides being an accomplished and honored educator, physician, and surgeon, Dr. Richard Anderson is also a dedicated family man. He is married and living with his wife Becky and their children in Morton, Illinois. He is a supportive dad who believes it is important to remain actively involved in his children’s extra-curricular activities including soccer, band, cheer, and video gaming tournaments. In addition, Dr. Anderson enjoys hunting and training his dog, Remi.
