About
David Pinson is a 1978 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. After two years in private mixed practice in western Kentucky, Dr. Pinson returned to graduate school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. There he completed a laboratory animal medicine and pathology training program. His PhD was completed in 1985 (Experimental Pathology). He went on to Auburn University and University of Florida to prepare for the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. This exam was passed on the first attempt in 1986. Under Dr. Stephen Russell, Dr. Pinson completed an NIH Research Career Development Award in 1992 at the University of Kansas Medical Center focusing on macrophage immunobiology. He achieved certification from the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine in 1990.
Dr. Pinson rose to the rank of professor at Kansas and took the directorship of the Laboratory Animal Resources program in 2000-2011. In the last 5 years at KU, he was engaged in active learning models for teaching first year medical students. He relocated to Peoria in 2011 to join the faculty at UICOMP and has been active as attending veterinarian at this campus and active in teaching.
The professional summary includes participation in many collaborative research projects, two funded NIH grants, GLP training, consultation in a GLP contract research organization (Midwest Research Institute) and administrative experience managing up to 51 employees. He has been involved in two major building programs adding 75,000 square feet of animal housing space. He is currently an ad hoc specialist for AAALAC.
Dr. Pinson, currently teaches in the first and second year medical curriculum at University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria where he also manages the small animal facility. He also serves on the faculty promotion committee, the 3-site curriculum committee, the biosafety committee, as well as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. He also serves on the assessment task force and has served on the Certification Examination Board of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. He recently completed one term on the Peoria Campus Executive Committee. His CV lists 102 publications and one book chapter and numerous abstracts.
