About

Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Gabel was born in Denver, Colorado where she spent her childhood before moving to Clinton, Illinois prior to high school. She received her undergraduate degree from Millikin University and played volleyball for the Big Blue. She went to medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago and did her residency at University of Rochester/Highland Family Medicine in Rochester, NY.

After graduating, she spent a few years in the snow in Buffalo, NY doing full time outpatient practice with UBMD. It was there where she fell in love with teaching medical students. As her and her husband planned to return to the Midwest, teaching was something she wanted to prioritize as part of her career. She joined the UICOMP family in 2020 with roles in all four years of undergraduate medical education. She started to precept with the Peoria Family Medicine Residency program in the outpatient clinic at the end of 2022.

She lives with her husband, Greg, who is also a physician with OSF and their two dogs, Norman and Mildred. She enjoys doing any outdoor activity from biking to hiking to gardening and beyond.

The best part of my job is seeing the growth of a learner. I have a unique position to be able to see the same group of students during their very first standardized patient in M1 year to a patient encounter during their Sub-I in Family Medicine. The amount they learn, grow and change is amazing! And now, being able to see some of the same students stay and continue their growth in residency, it’s an honor to bear witness to that!
