About
Dr. Adam Cross is a triple-boarded physician in General Pediatrics, Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and Clinical Informatics. He currently holds an academic appointment at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria, affiliated with OSF HealthCare Children's Hospital of Illinois, and an adjunct appointment through the Healthcare Engineering Systems Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Although an Illinois native, Dr. Cross spent four years providing care to underserved populations in New Mexico, including indigenous communities, refugees, and immigrants. In 2017, he received an AAP CATCH grant to create a community-sourced, multilingual resource guide and video education series for New Mexico’s three largest refugee populations. Dr. Cross also served as a hospital ethicist and assisted in drafting state legislation on fair and just allocation of critical care resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has a passion for improving outcomes and reducing disparities in pediatric healthcare through technological innovation, medical education, and infrastructure optimization.
In 2020, Dr. Cross became the director of the Children’s Innovation Lab to achieve clinically meaningful insights into pediatric conditions by means of translational research informatics, and to augment the knowledge and workflow of pediatric healthcare workers to promote optimal clinical decisions in real time at the point of care through novel data discovery and innovative data application methods.
In 2023, Dr. Cross became the director of machine learning research efforts for the Department of Pediatrics, the largest department at his institution, and regularly provides consultation services for researchers interested in the intersection of machine learning and pediatric healthcare.
Select funded projects include the design of a clinical knowledge graph framework for a predictive graphical neural network related to COVID-19 hospitalizations and severity of illness, the creation of a clinical dashboard with predictive modeling for pediatric under-immunization hotspots using spatio-temporal factorization, the development of an automated analytical model and biomedical device for respiratory audio signal acquisition and analysis, the design of a smartphone-enabled concussion feature detection application powered by deep learning methods, pharmacologic optimization of behavioral management in persons with autism, and early passive detection of rare disease phenotypes.
In his free time, Dr. Cross enjoys hiking, rock climbing, paddleboarding, baking, reading, and playing pickleball.
