Dr. Richard Pearl is a 1975 graduate of Kent State University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He received his medical degree at Wright State University in 1980, and completed his Surgical Internship at Madigan Army Medical Center one year later. He completed a General Surgery Residency at Harvard Surgical Service, New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and a Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, where he later became Chief of Pediatric Surgery.
In conjunction with this medical training and service, Dr. Pearl is a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, with a distinguished career spanning from 1966-1994. From 1988-1994 he was Chief, Pediatric Surgical Service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He has received numerous military honors including the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit.
Dr. Pearl is Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Chief, Section of Pediatric Surgery, Attending Team Leader of the General Surgery Residency Pediatric Surgery Service, and Director of the Pre-Op Case Conference. He was the recipient of the 2002-2003 UICOMP ‘Faculty of the Year’ Award and the 2002-2003 UIC (all campus) ‘Faculty of the Year’ Award. Dr. Pearl was voted 'Teacher of the Year' by the resident class of 2010. He is Director of Pediatric Trauma, Surgeon-in-Chief, and Director of the Pediatric Surgery Center at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois in our main teaching facility.
Dr. Pearl lives with his wife, Lauretta, in Peoria and is the father of three daughters.
