About

Dr. Andres Maldonado is the newest member to the UICOMP faculty joining in August 2019. Dr. Maldonado completed his Neurosurgery Residency training at the Cleveland Clinic, where in addition to this, he subspecialized in the fields of Epilepsy Surgery and Functional Neurosurgery by completing two years of enfolded fellowship training. He received his medical education from Central University of Ecuador, after which he pursued a post-doctoral research fellowship in the world renowned “The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis” at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine in Florida, where he focused efforts in the development of translational research on “Autologous Schwann Cell Transplantation for the treatment of Spinal Cord Injury.”

Dr. Maldonado specializes in neurosurgical treatments for adult and pediatric patients with epilepsy, movement disorders and tumors, including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Responsive Neurostimulation (RNS), Robotic-Assisted Invasive monitoring with Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) for Epilepsy, MRI-guided Neuroablation (Laser Lesioning), as well as classic Epilepsy Surgery such as Temporal and Extra-temporal resections, Hemispherectomies, Corpus Callosotomies and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). His current main interest is the development of a large scale Epilepsy and Movement Disorders Center in Central Illinois, for national and international patient referral. Future goals include the development and application of brain-machine interface technology and bionics research.
