National Sickle Cell Awareness Month

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and UICOMP students joined the Sickle Cell Team at OSF and Children’s Hospital of Illinois to volunteer at the annual Sickle Cell-E-Bration Wellness event. This event aims to share awareness of the disease and engage with the Sickle Cell Warrior community and their loved ones to connect, discuss, and provide education and resources for those living with sickle cell disease or trait.

This year’s event included a live patient and advocate panel discussion and organ-based education booths run by medical students, residents, and representatives from organizations like gene therapy and counseling services. The event ends with the lighting of the Murray Baker Bridge in red in recognition of sickle cell disease.
