Peoria Med School Students Learn Results of Match Day 2021
The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria’s Class of 2021 gathered virtually for “Match Day” on March 19 to learn where they would be spending the next few years of their medical training on their path to practicing medicine.
Match Day is the nationwide unveiling, simultaneously, by thousands of fourth year medical students of their assigned residency program. The “match” information tells them where they will spend the next three to seven years of their residency training. The students gathered virtually at 10 am, and the event was live-streamed so family and friends could observe virtually.
This year 50 UICOMP students matched to 16 different specialties in 18 states. Of those, 27 are headed into primary care, and 23 students will remain in Illinois with nine matching to residency programs in Peoria. The top three specialties medical students chose to pursue this year were Internal Medicine (12), Surgery (8), and Family Medicine (7).
In Peoria, 83 residency positions were filled.
