Faculty Academy for Medical Educators in Simulation (FAMES)

The Faculty Academy for Medical Educators in Simulation (FAMES) is a 12-month-long faculty development program focused on developing simulation education leaders and scholars. The program is designed to enhance the competencies of participants in simulation-based teaching, curriculum development, medical education research, and mentoring. Participants will help advance the clinical skills of learners (medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students), their scholarly work, and personal and professional growth through seminars, mentored projects, and collaborative learning. The program also supports the advancement of UICOMP’s strategic initiative to “Provide faculty and staff development and mentoring opportunities to enhance faculty skills, engagement, and support.”

The first cohort of faculty scholars started in 2023. Funding for the program was made possible through a generous donor. The cohort meets once a month on Thursday afternoons with faculty participating in a series of sessions to meet the curricular objectives and complete curriculum development projects.

A call for applications goes out at the beginning of the calendar year.

Objectives

At the completion of this program, the participants will:

  • Apply the principles of curriculum development to develop and implement a simulation-based approach to teaching clinical and teamwork skills.
  • Enhance their knowledge of facilitating and debriefing after a simulation session.
  • Apply their teaching skills to directly observe and facilitate simulation sessions at both UME and GME levels.
  • Submit a scholarly product for peer review.

Criteria to Apply

To apply for the program:

  • You must be a UICOMP faculty member.
  • Provide evidence that demonstrates an interest in simulation. Evidence may include but are not limited to:
    • Active participation in simulation-based education (UME, GME, CME level) for a minimum of 1 year
    • An assigned educator for simulation education in a department or unit.
    • Development and implementation of a simulation-based curriculum in UME/GME at UICOMP or another institution within the last 2-3 years.
