Med-Peds Residency Life

Peoria Med-Peds believes that creating a community and strong relationships within the program is a huge part of what makes our program special and very much like a family. In other words, we’re serious about medicine AND serious about having fun together!

Throughout the year, we host a variety of events to build that sense of community. Some of the highlights include:

Taking place either during Orientation or sometime at the beginning of the academic year, our program loves to welcome our new interns with an outside event with plenty of food, fun, and fellowship. It is a great time for our interns to meet their co-residents, the Med-Peds faculty, and staff!

Every August, the office of Graduate Medical Education organizes what we fondly call “The Golf Outing.” This is one of the few days each academic year that ALL residents and fellows are excused from duty to spend some time together in the warm weather. Residents can choose from compiling a team of four for golf, swimming at a local country club, or hiking around Wildlife Prairie Park.

Being a Med-Peds resident comes with many unique challenges, including switching back and forth between Medicine and Pediatrics every four months. Before the first “switch,” our program hosts what we call Switch Dinner, which is a chance for the residents to get together over dinner, learn the specifics of what it means to switch sides for the first time, and speak candidly about the experience with their co-residents. This is also the time where we prepare our super-terns to become senior residents for the first time.

Another Graduate Medical Education-sponsored event is the Resident Holiday Party. Held usually the first Friday in December, this fun evening soiree featuring a multi-course dinner and dancing gives all of the residents, fellows, program leadership, and staff a chance to get dressed up and celebrate the season together. All residents and fellows are excused from duty for this event. Our program also hosts its own holiday party over lunch the week before holiday blocks begin.

Jeopardy/Trivia Heading link

Each June, we wrap up the academic year with a friendly competition of trivia! Each of our Med-Peds “Houses” breaks off into teams to see who will reign supreme in the areas of medical knowledge, fun facts about the Med-Peds faculty/staff, Peoria Med-Peds history, and faculty impersonations.

If there is an adult intramural rec league in the area, chances are the Peoria Med-Peds residents have a team! The Peoria Park District hosts many different adult leagues throughout the year. Peoria Med-Peds competes in soccer, softball, volleyball, and kickball. We also have a running club we fondly named, “Rapid Thigh Movement.”

Class Retreats Heading link

Med-Ped Class Retreat Activity: Group Gathers for Paintball

Every academic year, each of our four PGY classes has a retreat with the program leadership and staff. This is a great way for each class to spend time together outside of the hospital. Traditionally, our intern class joins with the Pediatric interns at Great Oaks Camp for team building and the high ropes course. Our PGY2-4 classes usually vote on what activity they would like to do. We have done canoeing, hiking, craft-making, pottery, escape rooms, and more!

Throughout the year, we run mini-competitions between the Houses to have a little bit of extra fun. In the past several years, we have done scavenger hunts, hospital I-Spy, pumpkin carving contests, snowman building contests, holiday dessert competitions, photography contests, and more!

This year’s Peoria MedPeds House Cup Donation Drive supported two local charities: Sophia’s Kitchen and Promise Academy.
