Multiple Sclerosis Research
Dr. Carl Asche, Director of the Center for Outcomes Research (COR) at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) and his team perform economic evaluation and statistical analysis on a range of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) health care topics and activities funded by the Central Illinois MS Council. One example has been the development of an integrated MS Flowsheet Registry designed to provide a complete picture of the MS patient. COR partnered up on the project with the OSF JUMP Simulation Center and the OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute (INI) MS Center. COR has also worked in conjunction with the OSF HealthCare INI MS Center and the Central Illinois MS Council over the past three years to help organize a local research group around MS – the first of its kind in the U.S. devoted to MS. To date, they have secured three “Pipeline to Proposal” awards from Washington, D.C.-based Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and now are seeking additional funding for a multi-year study evaluate yoga, treadmill exercise and aqua size (exercise within a swimming pool) as beneficial forms of therapy for MS.
The Center for Outcomes research is committed to collaborating in the improved health of multiple sclerosis patients. We recently completed the Tier III Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Award. In this project, people with multiple sclerosis discussed and prioritized research areas of greatest importance, connecting them with research and medical professionals with whom to collaborate.
We have applied for the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Award where we will answer the question: Which exercise program is better for people with multiple sclerosis? Treadmill, Aquatic, or Yoga? Patients and researchers will lead this project. Partners include: Illinois Neurological Institute, Illinois State University, Jump Simulation and Education Center, and Center for Outcomes Research and Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria.
