International Agreement Launches Collaboration Between College of Medicine Peoria and Himachal Pradesh in India
Introduction
Leaders from the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP) welcomed officials from Himachal Pradesh in India for signing an agreement that leads to a new global exchange. The agreement is a collaboration between UICOMP and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Himachal Pradesh in India.
The agreement establishes the Alliance for Workforce Exchange and Shared Optimization in Medical Excellence (AWESOME) initiative and was made possible by philanthropic support from Ranjisinghi “Bobby” Ramroop, a 1987 graduate of Indira Gandhi Medical College at Shimla. The AWESOME initiative is the first step in fostering collaboration in the areas of medical education, research and clinical innovation through such efforts as partnerships, joint programs, faculty exchanges and research initiatives.
Secretary of Health of Himachal Pradesh Sudha Devi Muthu reaffirmed the government's full commitment to this partnership and the structured effort to strengthen their health system through global academic collaboration, including financial support to improving health outcomes, advancing medical science, and building resilient systems.
“This partnership will help prepare physicians and health leaders who are responsive to cultural context and capable of addressing complex health challenges across borders,” says Meenakshy Aiyer, MD, regional dean of UICOMP.
“Through AWESOME, our partnership with Himachal Pradesh opens the door to similar opportunities—learner exchange, faculty collaboration, interdisciplinary innovation, and research that is locally grounded and globally relevant. It equips our students and trainees with invaluable multidisciplinary and cross‑cultural perspectives, nurturing the next generation of global health leaders. Today’s signing is a commitment to shared learning, reciprocal partnership, and a future where education and innovation advance health for all.”
In speaking of the opportunities made possible by this agreement, Sudha Devi Muthu, secretary of health with Government of Himachal Pradesh, states, “This partnership represents structured effort to strengthen our health systems through global academic collaboration which will benefit three areas: workforce capacity enhancement, collaborative research and alignment with global standards… while our contexts may differ, our goals are shared: improving health outcomes, advancing medical science and building resilient systems.
“We look forward to a collaboration that not only benefits our institutions, but contributes meaningfully to global health knowledge.”
