College of Medicine Peoria Welcomes Jojo Mitchell, Offers New Clinical Psychology Fellowship

Jojo Mitchell

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria welcomes Jojo M. Mitchell, PhD, LCP, as assistant professor of clinical psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and introduces a new clinical psychology postdoctoral fellowship.

Dr. Mitchell established the postdoctoral fellowship and will serve as its director. The 12-month, full-time training program provides advanced training in adult clinical psychology. The fellowship will welcome its first fellow, Aveen Sharma, PsyD, in August 2025.

“I’m honored and excited to join the University of Illinois College of Medicine as the first postdoctoral fellow in their program. This role reflects the program’s strong commitment to advancing clinicians from diverse disciplines and investing in professional development at every level,” says Sharma. “I’m especially looking forward to working within their multidisciplinary treatment team—an environment that fosters collaboration, innovation, and the highest quality of patient care through integrated teamwork. I’m eager to contribute meaningfully to the program and grow alongside such a dedicated and forward-thinking group of professionals.”

The program was established with support from the Gilmore Foundation. Laura Cullinan, president of the Gilmore Foundation, says, “Gilmore is proud to partner with UICOMP and Carle to address the immediate behavioral health crises in the community, and to advance a sustainable workforce for behavioral health treatment and mental health services.  We welcome Dr. Mitchell as the latest, in a growing number of skilled professionals, who Choose Greater Peoria.”

Fellowships are specialized educational programs that provide advanced training in a specific area. Programs offer in-depth education, experience and skill development beyond the usual scope of clinical preparation. The psychology postdoctoral fellowship is the first of its kind in central Illinois. Housed in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, the program joins 14 other UICOMP fellowships.

A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Mitchell earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy and completed an APA-accredited internship at the University of Iowa. His experience includes staff psychologist at Illinois State University and director of Counseling and Consultation Services at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Clinically, Mitchell offers evidence-based services for the community including individual therapy for adults at the UICOMP Department’s Psychiatry and Psychology Outpatient Center, located in the Carle Methodist Atrium Building, 900 Main Street, Suite 720, Peoria. Mitchell accepts referrals for outpatient therapy for trauma and PTSD, dissociation, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, personality disorders, grief, self-esteem, relationship issues, and other issues. Dr. Mitchell has partnered with Central Illinois Friends and Positive Health Solutions clinics to expand mental health treatment to the LGBTQ+ community in Central Illinois.
