Welcome From Our Department Chair
Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. As a department within the largest medical school in the country, we are able to offer university-based residency training within the context of a world-class community-based tertiary care academic medical center hosted in a very family-friendly city. Combine these features with our exceptional staff and trainees and you have a residency training experience that is truly unique.
The goal of our program is to train residents to be exceptional physicians who are equipped for any career path in Internal Medicine – primary care, hospital medicine, academic medicine, or fellowship training. We achieve this goal through a progressive curriculum that includes:
- diverse ambulatory and inpatient clinical experiences
- outstanding teaching conferences
- web-based learning resources
- an environment that promotes faculty-resident interactions, scholarship and self-directed learning
Our teaching hospital, OSF-Saint Francis Medical Center, is an exceptional facility for residency training. Our referral area of over one million people assures that our residents see a tremendous variety of clinical cases and have an opportunity to work closely with attending physicians from all subspecialties of Internal Medicine. The remarkable dedication of our faculty – both full-time and volunteer – to resident education remains one of the greatest strengths of our residency program.
You and your family won’t have to sacrifice three years of your lives in order to receive solid residency training. Our programs are intentionally resident- and family-friendly. Salaries and benefits are generous and stretch even farther, given the favorable cost-of-living compared with larger cities. Commutes are minimal, crime rates are low, and folks here are friendly. Our collective residencies host over one hundred post-graduate trainees who share their collegiality both inside and outside the hospital. All this makes for a good place to both learn and relax.
We are proud of our program and our residents. If you are considering a career in Internal Medicine, then you owe it to yourself to learn more about what we have to offer. We seek residents who set high standards for themselves, both personally and professionally, and are willing to work hard to meet those standards; who are self-directed, self-motivated learners that are willing to partner with the program to achieve their educational goals; and who value being part of what we think is an exceptional team.
Please feel free to contact us at the address listed on this website. I look forward to meeting you!
