Goal
The student will spend two weeks with an assigned preceptor. Dr. Horinek is the director of this course. The student will round with the nephrologist on the consult service at SFMC. This subspecialty elective is inpatient based, with potential for outpatient upon discussion with the preceptor. The students will assist the preceptors in rounding on established nephrology patients, as well as assisting in the evaluation of the nephrology consults in the hospital. The students will also participate in dialysis rounds and nephrology didactics as they are offered.
Objectives
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Obtain, document, and present an appropriate history and physical examination that differentiates the etiology in a patient presenting with acute renal failure.
- Describe and discuss the clinical approach to the diagnosis and management of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease.
- Identify the common clinical manifestations of uremia.
- Identify and describe the appropriate medical management of patients with ESRD on dialysis.
- Develop a diagnostic approach and treatment plan for patients with proteinuria.
- Develop a diagnostic approach and treatment plan for patients with hematuria.
