Goal
This elective will provide visiting students with the opportunity to work alongside the inpatient neurology resident teams to care for patients in the general neurology, neurology ICU, and stroke wards. The student will gain exposure to a wide range of pathologies that these services encounter. Students will participate in all aspects of neurologic patient care as well as attend daily didactics with the neurology residents. Typical hours are 0700-1630, one weekday you will be assigned a late call, which will end by 2000. You will be assigned one weekend call of 0700-1900.

Objectives
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Actively engage in patient care of a wide variety of neurologic patient pathologies
  2. Demonstrate the ability of history taking and physical examination of patients with common neurological problems and formulate a clinical differential diagnosis.
  3. Become familiar with neurological testing used to create a hypothesis-formulating approach in the further exploration of a given case, utilizing the following tests and identifying their indications and contradictions
  4. a. Electroencephalography
    b. Computerized Tomography
    c. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography
    d. Doppler carotid flow studies
    e. Lumbar puncture

  5. Demonstrate initial workup, investigations, and management of common acute neurological emergencies and stroke
  6. Successfully complete lumbar puncture simulation
  7. Understand the unique learning atmosphere and camaraderie of our neurology residency program.
