Goal
This course provides a broad-based introduction to the world of medical imaging. Students will be required to either purchase a textbook (approximately $60.00) or access eBook online. They will be required to read the textbook in its entirety and will be tested on the material in the book as well as lecture content. A series of lectures will be presented to the students, in person or via Zoom. The student's grade will be based on tests that will be given during the elective and attendance of required lectures and clinic duties.
Students may be required to attend clinical rotations within the Dept. of Radiology at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center: fluoroscopy, plain films, neuroradiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, body imaging, radiation oncology, and pediatric radiology.
Objectives
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the basics of reading chest and abdominal films.
- Describe the appropriate use of diagnostic radiological examinations and their applications in medicine.
- Discuss the field of medical imaging and the types of evidence that radiologists often use in formulating diagnoses.
