Phase 1 Grade Assignments, Outcomes and Next Steps
Introduction
This page summarizes the assignment of grades for the 4 courses within the Phase 1 curriculum. For details on any points listed below, please consult the syllabus for each course or reach out to the course director. The outcomes and next steps for any grade assignment are also summarized.
Unmet Requirements and Course Failure
Unmet Requirement (UR)
Blocks 1-7:
Scoring below the MPL on any one of the following:
- Final Block Exam
- Professional Engagement (attendance)
- Overall final course grade
Synthesis (Weeks and Block 8):
- Failing to complete a make-up assignment resulting from an unexcused absence
- Failing to complete a make-up assignment resulting from a missed mandatory session (even if excused)
- Failing to meet the MPL for a Synthesis Week or for Block 8
DoCS 1 Fall, Spring, Summer and DOCS 2: Fall, Spring
- Failing the second attempt of a high-stakes exam
Medical Colloquia:
- Two late and/or missed assignments
Outcome:
- The UR must be met (assignment/retake exam) to pass the course
- No effect on course transcription, simply P for Pass
- One point deduction from the class quartile calculation
- Quartile rankings are used to determine eligibility for AOA nomination and eligibility for graduation with honors.
Next steps:
- Students receive a PEAR letter from the Asst. Dean
- Students must attend a student academic support (SAS) meeting with their academic advisor, the Asst. Dean, and the academic learning specialist
- Students have the right to submit a grade grievance
Unmet Requirement - Course Remediation Required (UR-CRR)
Blocks 1-7:
Scoring below the MPL on any two of the following:
- Final Block Exam
- Professional Engagement (attendance)
- Overall final course grade
Synthesis (Weeks and Block 8):
- Failing to complete an UR assignment by the due date
- Failing to meet the MPL for both Synthesis Week 1 and Synthesis Week 2
DoCS 1 Fall, Spring and DoCS 2 Fall:
- Failing to meet attendance requirements (exceeding unexcused absences or late arrivals)
DoCS 1 Summer and DoCS 2 Spring:
- Scoring below 70% of available points for assignments, assessments, quizzes and SP encounters
Medical Colloquia:
- Three late and/or missed assignments
Outcome:
- The UR-CRR must be remediated to pass the course
- Recorded as a “P” but with “Pass after initial Fail” notation
- Five-point deduction from the class quartile calculation
- Quartile rankings are used to determine eligibility for AOA nomination and eligibility for graduation with honors.
Next steps:

Synthesis (Weeks and Block 8):
- Failing to complete a UR-CRR assignment by the due date
DoCS 1 Fall, Spring and DoCS 2 Fall:
- Failing the third attempt at a high stakes exam
- Scoring below 70% of available points for assignments, assessments, quizzes and SP encounters
- Egregious unprofessional behavior in high stakes exams
DoCS 1 Summer and DoCS 2 Spring:
- Egregious unprofessional behavior in high stakes exams
Medical Colloquia:
- Four or more late and/or missed assignments
- Failing to remediate coursework as directed
Outcome:
- Students need to step out of the curriculum
- Students have the right to submit a grade grievance
- Students will be eligible for dismissal or a repeat year
Multiple URs/UR-CRRs
Students who acquire more than a total of 2 URs (with or without CRRs) over the course of their M1 year OR who acquire more than a total of 1 UR (with or without CRRs) over the course of their M2 year will:
- Need to step out of the curriculum
- Have the right to submit a grade grievance
- Be eligible for dismissal or a repeat year
