Family Medical Center

We moved into our new Family Medical Center (FMC) in fall 1998. The facility is located just 3 blocks from UnityPoint Health – Methodist on the same grounds as the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The second floor contains all of the administrative offices of the residency as well as the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DCFM) from the medical school. There is ample lecture and conference space, as well as shared offices/workrooms for the residents.

Even more important, the large first floor clinic is the combined office for our residency clinic and our full-time faculty members’ private practices. This makes more faculty members immediately available for consultation during office hours, in addition to the scheduled preceptors. It also means that faculty can easily share procedures and relevant patient findings from their practice with residents in the clinic. We have our own laboratory and our own x-ray suite, which offers residents the opportunity to view x-rays immediately and then learn from the radiologist’s reading. Finally, the building is set up with multiple computers for use of our electronic medical record system, which has been in use for a few years now.

Last year, the Family Medical Center (the residents’ clinic) had 15,543 patient visits. Approximately 1,500 of these visits were OB patient visits. At least one of our preceptors is on duty at the Family Medical Center during all hours of operation. A second preceptor acts as a supervisor when you perform special procedures in the office.

After moving into this facility, the operations of FMC have continuously expanded. We are a wholly independent facility with a variety of radiology equipment and a full-time laboratory. There are also regularly scheduled specialty clinics that operate out of FMC which are staffed by the residency faculty with residents working each clinic during the corresponding rotation.

There is a very large support staff at FMC that consists of nurses, CMAs, secretarial staff, files and scanning staff, laboratory personnel, and an x-ray technician. There is also a network of leadership to oversee the day-to-day function of the clinic with full-time dedication to the Family Medical Center.

University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP)

Less than one block away from the Family Medical Center, the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria has an extensive library, computer laboratory, and other facilities. Our residents receive faculty appointments to UICOMP and have the opportunity to teach medical students.

Methodist Atrium

Many of the specialist physicians that are involved in teaching our family medicine residents have offices located in the Methodist Atrium building. It is also just across the street from the Family Medical Center which makes it a convenient location for resident assignments.

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, within easy walking distance, is the site for rotations in neonatal intensive care and pediatrics. Saint Francis is a large tertiary care facility and provides an excellent opportunity for experience in the pediatric units. During your rotations there you become part of the respective teaching service, along with residents from pediatrics, medicine, Med/Peds, OB/Gyn, and Emergency Medicine. Our residents are treated with respect and become a valuable part of the team, and are able to get to know the residents from the other programs.

The pediatrics rotation there is in the Children’s Hospital, giving residents exposure to a wide range of pediatric problems. There is also a perinatal high risk obstetrics service, in which our residents can participate as an elective. The level I Trauma Center offers an opportunity for a trauma elective.

Heartland at Carver Clinic

Second year residents help staff Heartland at Carver Clinic as part of their community medicine rotation. In addition, second or third-year residents have the option of gaining invaluable high risk obstetrical experience by running this inner-city facility with an obstetrics attending.

Mason County Health Department

Residents on the OB/Women’s Health track have the option of seeing patients at the Mason County Health Department in Havana, Illinois (a one hour drive southeast of Peoria). There is a high-risk prenatal clinic and a family planning clinic. Prenatal patients deliver at UnityPoint Health – Methodist. Patients are seen on Wednesday afternoons.
