Director of Academic Programs

A native of Chile, Dr. Berrocal earned his medical degree from Catholic University Santiago de Guayaquil, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in Neuroscience from the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, and a Master of Health Professions Education in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to arriving at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP), Dr. Berrocal was an Assistant Professor focusing on medical education at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM), where he held several leadership positions. These include Year/Period 2 Curriculum Director; Director of Academic Support; Course Director for the Cardiovascular & Respiratory Systems; Course Director for the Nervous System and Behavior course; and Course Co-Director for the Integrated Functions of the Human Body course. In addition, he served on numerous committees and participated as a teaching faculty in various other courses at HWCOM.

Dr. Berrocal is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences Education and Pathology at UICOMP. He serves as the director for the Circulation and Respiration Block (Block 4) within the Phase 1 Undergraduate Medical Education curriculum and chairs the Peoria Phase 1 Curriculum Committee. He also serves on the student promotions committee, executive committee, and assessment task force. He is actively involved in all aspects of pre-clinical medical education at UICOMP, including the delivery, development, and improvement of the curriculum.

Dr. Berrocal has over a decade of experience in curriculum development, active learning methodologies, LCME accreditation, student support, technology-enhanced education, and basic science and clinical medicine integration. He has presented his work and workshops at national and international conferences.
