Biographical Info


A native of Peoria, Dr. Lorin D. Whittaker, Jr, M.D. received his undergraduate degree in Pre-Med from the University of Illinois at Champaign and his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. He completed his Surgical Internship at the University of Illinois Research and Educational Hospitals in Chicago and his Residency in General Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Whittaker has been on our faculty since 1971, and had been the Surgery Clerkship Director since 1991. Dr. Whittaker retired in June 2009 and still serves as Associate Clerkship Director. He has received numerous awards in recognition of his academic service including the 2000 UICOMP ‘Outstanding Teaching Award’, the 2004 UICOMP ‘Outstanding Service Award’, the 2005 UICOMP ‘Faculty of the Year’ award, and the 2005 (all-campus) UIC ‘Faculty of the Year’ award.

In the surgical community, Dr, Whittaker served as President of the Peoria Medical Society, two terms as President of the Illinois Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Governor of the American College of Surgeons from 1989-1995, and currently serves on numerous committees for the Association for Surgical Education. He is the 2008 recipient of that organization’s national ‘Educator of the Year’ award.

Dr. Whittaker is board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is on the active staff of OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and Methodist Medical Center. He is Emeritus Director, Foundation Board of Directors, Methodist Medical Center of Illinois, 2007-present.

Dr. Whittaker and his wife Rebecca reside in Peoria. He is the father of four grown children.
