Dr. Carmen S. Kirkness, PT, PhD, is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Peoria and Assistant Director for the Center for Outcomes Research (COR) where she participates in research studies that evaluate patient outcomes in the clinical setting.  Dr. Kirkness’ research interests include interdisciplinary quantitative patient-focused outcomes in the areas of orthopaedics, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, evidence-based practice health disparity and health outcomes. Dr. Kirkness has conducted clinical outcomes research for 11 years.  Most recently, her work has involved the development, implementation and management of a patient–reported outcome registry integrated into clinical practice and which is used to evaluate patient quality of life, physical function and activity level before and after total hip and knee arthroplasty.  Dr. Kirkness received degrees in Physical Therapy (McMaster University), a MSc. (McGill University) and PhD (University of Utah) in Rehabilitation Science with an emphasis in epidemiology.
