Purpose:
Develop ideas to engage in effective education, training, research, clinical care, and community outreach to improve health equity in specific cases and communities.

Objectives:

  1. Learn about the importance of listening first -- always, but especially on the street. “The streets teach.” - Dr. James Withers
  2. Unlearn prior-taught ideas about a checklist of things that must be accomplished in every visit.
  3. Understand Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Stages of Change theory, to be sensitive to what patients are ready to work on (or not).
  4. Learn methods to find common ground with each patient or person encountered.
  5. Deconstruct myths learned in the past about homelessness and begin to learn new truths about the beauty of those struggling with homelessness who you will encounter.

Target Audience:
Physicians and other healthcare professionals in all areas wanting to address the disparity of care in the healthcare field.

Mary Stapel, MD | Lead Physician | Community Care and Community Clinic at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center

Mary Stapel is the Lead Physician for Community Care and Community Clinic at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. She practiced outpatient primary care for several years prior to moving into this role, and is a board certified internist and pediatrician. Her current roles within Community Care include Street Medicine, Shelter Medicine, School-Based Health, Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Faith Community, and the Care-A-Van (mobile care unit). Dr. Stapel is director of the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Global Rural Local Health Equity track, and also serves as an assistant program director for the Med-Peds Residency. Dr. Stapel is also co-director for the inaugural Urban Medicine program for the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. She has particular interest in community and population health approaches with a focus on vulnerable populations.
