Pediatrics Clerkship
The M-3 Pediatrics Clerkship is an eight-week clinical experience for medical students in their third year of training.
Students spend one month on inpatient general pediatrics, two weeks in an ambulatory pediatric office, one week in the newborn nursery and one week on a pediatric subspecialty of their choice. Students learn about acute and chronic pediatric illnesses, normal and abnormal growth and development, as well as health promotion in pediatrics and preventative medicine. Students interact with pediatric residents and are precepted by faculty from a variety of pediatric disciplines. At the end of the clerkship, students take the NBME pediatrics Shelf test to assess their knowledge base.
The primary goal of the M-3 Pediatrics Clerkship is to acquaint the M-3 student with the field of Pediatrics, while reinforcing and encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The M-3 student should finish their clerkship with the basic fund of knowledge that any physician should have regarding Pediatrics. In addition, the student will have ample opportunities to become familiar and comfortable interacting with children and their care givers, and to observe the impact of wellness and illness on the child, the family, and the community.
