Welcome from the Chair

Dr. Finkenbine

At the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine at Peoria we aspire to provide excellence in education, clinical care, service, and research. We invite you to learn about the many activities and programs established to achieve these goals.

The department is excited about the prospect of an accredited psychiatry residency training program beginning 2011. The program has been developed from inception on the principle that the best training environment will occur if the leadership, faculty teachers, clinical rotations, educational curricula, physical space, resources, and support services are all directed to educational purposes.  Few departments enjoy the advantage of developing a program prospectively, “from the ground up," with education as the primary underpinning. This approach, built upon the department's decades of experience in medical student training, will yield great dividends in our pursuit of excellence in education.

Our broad clinical care activities have addressed patient needs in Peoria and Central Illinois for many years. Our talented faculty and staff have established programs that offer best practice services in all aspects of mental illness management. Services include seamless integration between outpatient individual, family, couples, and group counseling, inpatient care, consultation, and employer support services. The recent development of subspecialty services for those with illnesses such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, or women's issues, among others, highlights our commitment to providing the highest level of clinical care. With these and other endeavors the department is poised to continue as a leader in patient care.

The department is proud of our many impressive community service accomplishments. We have served to provide care or expert consultation to local schools, mental health advocacy groups, and the judicial system. Our faculty are sought for opinions, education, or expertise in a number of mental health areas, including cognitive behavioral therapy, workplace safety, medication management, patient rights, and evidence-based algorithms, to name a few. We are especially proud of our commitment to improving the overall mental health care of Illinois citizens through state-wide education of clinicians and providers. Our university credentials and common-purpose approach lends credibility to our community services and will continue to do so into the future.

Scientific advancement remains a fundamental aspect of an academic mission. Our past scholarly achievements include dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and reviews. Active studies are ongoing in the areas of cognitive behavioral therapy, in-school health care, cardiac illness-related stress, and methods to improve the education of others. We boast an impressive 100% physician board certification rate; more than half of our faculty hold double boards. Finally, we have recently introduced an innovative Scholarship Policy that will help our new residents meet the highest standards for research and scientific activity.

Communication, energy, innovation and common purpose among our faculty, staff and trainees have defined our department. Each of us has embodied a spirit of collegiality and friendship that has produced a culture of respect and shared commitment to achieving our goals for excellence.
