Child Abuse Prevention Month

The Goal
To better serve children in Central Illinois who are suspected of being abused or neglected, this fund was created to receive money from annual events for Pediatric Resource Center operations.  Government grants do not typically cover all of the costs of providing the complexity of services these children need.  The PRC is committed to advocating for abused and neglected children for as long as necessary to ensure their safety, as well as their health and general well-being.

The Situation
The Pediatric Resource Center Community Board coordinates one major and a several minor fundraisers each year in an effort to raise over $100, 000 annually for PRC operations. In July, PRC’s Night at the Chiefs is a fun chance to come out to the ball field and help “strike out” abuse!  Every fall, Harvesting Hope continues to be an entertaining even for all who attend. Kindred Spirits is the final event-style fundraiser scheduled for 2016, with a classic whiskey tasting event at JK Williams Distillery.

In addition, a variety of activities surrounding April/Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month include Corporate Casual Day, when companies and employees come together to show their support for child abuse awareness in Central Illinois by picking a day to allow their employees to dress casually at work in exchange for making a donation to the PRC.  The Kick Abuse at Kickapoo 5K Trail Run and Fun Walk is held on the 3rd Saturday in April at Kickapoo Creek Winery. The participation for this event has increased dramatically since its first race in 2012, as runners and walkers delight in the beautiful scenery around the winery and enjoy post-race treats of all varieties!

The Impact
PRC staff is able to provide medical evaluations, treatment and advocacy services to each child that is referred to us, whether that referral comes from DCFS or the Emergency Department, parent or the police, and regardless of ability to pay.  For children in the midst of an abuse or neglect investigation, much work needs to be done to ensure their safety and well-being.  In 2014, the PRC saw a notable increase in the number of children referred for PRC services, but with a rise in support from generous donors and contributors, the funds raised from annual events have allowed the program to continue to serve these child victims.

The Promise
PRC staff will work to meet the medical needs of abused and neglected children throughout the Region.

Thank you for supporting PRC.
