Resident Comments

Kate Venable, MD: University of Nebraska College of Medicine
4th year Med-Peds Resident

Before I came here for residency, I heard through another Med/Peds program director that "the Med/Peds residents at Saint Francis are the stars." And now that I work here, I see what was meant by this comment. The people in our program are quality - in skill and knowledge, in character, in commitment to excellence in patient care. Our program has existed for 25 years and that gives a stability and recognition that provides a very positive environment in which to grow as a Med/Peds physician. This was one of the most attractive elements about the program to me. I appreciate having attendings that are Med/Peds trained, a large group of fellow residents, and the recognition from hospital staff and other residents who know that Med/Peds has been a strong program here for many years. We mesh well with both the Medicine and Pediatrics categorical residents and are an equal presence in both departments.

When I was searching for a residency, there were three aspects of a program that I found very important. First, I wanted a place where I felt that I would receive a quality education so that I could be the best physician I could be for my future patients. This meant I needed a place where I would see a wide array of patients from all types of backgrounds with all types of medical problems and a place where the attending physicians enjoyed lifetime learning as well as teaching. Second, I wanted a pleasant work environment with a family friendly atmosphere. Residency is always hard work, but I believe it should also be fun. Third, as a Med/Peds physician, I wanted a strong Med/Peds presence at the hospital and in the community. I have found everything I was looking for and more here at OSF in Peoria, and I couldn't be more pleased with my decision. In my first few months here, I have already cared for a wide variety of patients, enjoyed the educational attending-run morning reports, had the opportunity to bond with my fellow residents at retreats/golf outings, and seen first hand the strong Med/Peds presence in the community. Come check it out for yourself!

What I looked for in a program was a well-rounded experience, a chance to manage a diverse population, and see lots of the common and uncommon pathology in a collegial atmosphere. I found it in Peoria. The program, faculty, and staff are fantastic and committed to our education and excellence. The residents and attendings are hard working but know how to have fun both at work and away. We are a large program and work side-by-side with categorical residents. The program has deep roots in the community and many of our graduates stay in the area to practice. Location is an added bonus for me and my family. There are good schools in the area and you can live outside of the city and still only have a 10 minute drive commute. There are plenty of recreational activities in town and we are close to Chicago and St. Louis if you need your metropolis fix. Overall, this is a great place to learn, play, and raise a family if you desire.
