Fourth-year medical students from other medical colleges accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) are invited to participate in electives offered by the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.  Visiting students may apply for electives at any time, but applications will be held until after the UICOM-P lottery for M-4 students, usually late March.

Information about our fourth-year electives, elective calendar, immunization form, and application form is currently on our web site under student information/visiting student.  Please refer to the web site with any questions, first.  Review the process, procedures, and guidelines for acceptance.  READ CAREFULLY.  All applications are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Applications which are complete, and which pose little difficulty, may be fully processed and finalized ahead of those applications which were submitted without essential components.  If there are problems with your request, we will email you to resolve them.  Due to large numbers of applicants, please allow at least 30 days for your application to be processed to ensure adequate time for paperwork review and approval.  You will be sent a confirmation letter in the mail when your application is approved.  No student will be assured placement prior to UICOMP receiving an application and all essential components.  Students may apply for a maximum of 8 weeks of elective experience at UICOMP.

To apply for an elective students must:

  • download the application form, fill out Section I, and have your school fill out Section II
  • be fourth-year medical students in good academic standing at the start of the elective
  • have successfully completed the equivalent of any prerequisites listed for the desired course prior to participating in the elective
  • download and complete our immunization form and provide complete documentation of immunizations
  • be covered by malpractice and personal health insurance from your home institution
  • be HIPAA compliant and must have completed universal precautions training within one year prior to arrival.
  • download our Universal Precautions, Confidentiality Agreement, Infection Control, and Safety Review forms and sign

The visiting student’s school should provide a blank evaluation form with instructions for return to the appropriate person/department.  If an evaluation is not provided by the student’s school, we will fill out a UICOMP evaluation and return to the student’s school.  Return all required forms to:

The electives offered by each department are located under the department’s section in the Electives Catalog.  All electives (except two-week sessions) are scheduled according to block dates given.  Two-week electives are scheduled as either the first two weeks of a block or the last two.  Other arrangements can be made in some cases if you have schedule conflicts; your application form should indicate the dates you desire.  Most departments also offer individualized electives, customized to individuals’ interests.  Some electives and some time slots are exceptionally popular.  Please indicate second and third choices on your application form.  There is no application fee (for students from domestic schools) to enroll in electives at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.  Dormitory-style housing is provided at no cost, on a space-available basis, to visiting students who participate in any of our electives.  Cafeteria meals are also available at a reduced cost.
