Lorene King, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, moved to Peoria to attend Bradley University, after being awarded an academic scholarship. At Bradley, she earned a B.S. in Marketing, an M.S. in Liberal Studies, and studied community counseling. She plans to further her education by completing requirements for the MPH; then enrolling in a doctoral program. She spent more than a decade in both the private sector - including several years as a field representative for Caterpillar, Inc.; and in the public sector with Illinois Department Employment Security, doing intake and adjudication for unemployment claims; and with Illinois Central Community College as Remedial Instructor, Academic Advisor, and High School and Community Workshop Presenter. She continues at ICC as an Adjunct Instructor for the Social Sciences Department. In November 2006, she began her current position as Academic Skills Specialist with the Urban Health Program, which not only provides enhanced support to students from underrepresented populations; but dedicates substantial resources to assist any UICOMP medical student who is experiencing academic difficulties. Additionally, Lorene helps GME with preliminary screening and assessment of medical residents who encounter academic or communication hurdles. Lorene says, “Being able to collaborate with my colleagues to make a positive difference in students’ medical school education is a special privilege that I cherish”.
Personal interests include extensive involvement with her church conference at the local and state level; arts patron and volunteer at Contemporary Arts Center, civic involvement, reading and long-distance mentoring of two teenaged granddaughters.
